The word vascular has to do with the vessels that carry blood throughout the body.
Vascular surgery is the surgical treatment of arterial and venous disease. In other words, it is a specialty surgery performed to take care of diseases and problems with the vascular system, or with a body’s arteries and veins.
People who need this type of surgical treatment usually have an arterial or venous insufficiency. An arterial insufficiency is a condition slowing or stopping the flow of blood through your arteries, while a venous insufficiency is one where the flow of blood through your veins is impaired.
