Alimentary Tract

The alimentary tract, also known as the alimentary canal or digestive tract, is the tubular pathway where food enters the body, digests and then leaves the body. Parts of the body included in this pathway are the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, and anus.

Appendectomy

This procedure is the surgical removal of an appendix, which is the small tube branching off of the large intestine. This is normally an emergency surgery done because someone suffers from an inflamed or infected appendix, better known as appendicitis.

Bowel Resection

A bowel resection is a surgical procedure where part of the small or large intestine is removed. Common reasons for performing this procedure include cancer, enteritis, necrosis, diverticular disease or a block in the intestine because of scar tissue.

Gastric Resection

This operation involves the removal of part or all of the stomach. In most cases this is done to treat a form of stomach cancer or an intractable peptic ulcer.
